Support the Equal Rights Amendment!
On January 17, President Biden issued a strong statement declaring that the Equal Rights Amendment has been ratified and is the law of the land, having met both requirements of Article V with the vote of 2/3rds of Congress and ratification by 3/4th of the state legislatures.
Sign4ERA applauds President Biden’s unwavering support for the Equal Rights Amendment over more than 50 years.
President Biden’s statement is no longer on the White House website, but we need to keep the words close at hand:
I have supported the Equal Rights Amendment for more than 50 years, and I have long been clear that no one should be discriminated against based on their sex. We, as a nation, must affirm and protect women’s full equality once and for all.
On January 27, 2020, the Commonwealth of Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The American Bar Association (ABA) has recognized that the Equal Rights Amendment has cleared all necessary hurdles to be formally added to the Constitution as the 28th Amendment. I agree with the ABA and with leading legal constitutional scholars that the Equal Rights Amendment has become part of our Constitution.
It is long past time to recognize the will of the American people. In keeping with my oath and duty to the Constitution and country, I affirm what I believe and what three-fourths of the states have ratified: the 28th Amendment is the law of the land, guaranteeing all Americans equal rights and protections under the law regardless of their sex.
“The ERA would etch equal rights into the Constitution – to protect and expand our opportunities, choices, and rights,” stated Carolyn Maloney, the Sign4ERA founder.
“There is nothing in the President’s statement that prevents the Congress from also affirming the ERA as the 28th Amendment to the Constitution as they did with the 27th Amendment,” said Eleanor Smeal, President of the Feminist Majority and a Sign4ERA partner.
As the 119th congressional session marches on, we find ourselves at the edge of both frustration and hope.
We will continue to build a grassroots movement that focuses sharply on key congressional districts and states, knitting a web of support that no opposition can unravel.
Failure is impossible—provided we channel our frustration into a successful strategy, our anger into action.
We want to thank everyone who worked over this past year by writing to your Member of Congress about the House joint resolution and discharge petition. We were so close and next time will put any new resolutions over the finish line.
The only way to get things done is for all parties to come together. That’s the truth of it.
In this Congress, I hope women and men— Republicans, Democrats, and Independents— can find a way to work together.
Over the next two years, we must organize and then elect enough of our Congressional Representatives and Senators to ensure the ERA is fully recognized, published, and shielded from unfavorable judicial action.
We ask you to join in this effort. Dedicate a few hours each week or month to the cause.
Send an email to team@sign4ERA.org, and become an ERA Champion. We’ll get right back to you with action steps you can take in 2025.
Together, we will lay the groundwork for a future where equality is enshrined in our Constitution – a legacy no court can overturn.
For equality,
Team Sign4ERA
